About Bishop's Boxers

Welcome to our blog! If you are a computer, be sure to turn up your speaker volume so you can enjoy Boxertunes while you browse our site.

We are a boxer-loving family that recently retired from military life and relocated to the Chicago suburbs. Our love for the breed began back in 1987 with our first boxer in Minnesota. Although he wasn't the most beautiful boxer, Chesty became extremely well-trained. Unfortunately, in 1998, he got cancer and we had to put him down when he was nearly 11.

Knowing that we didn't want to experience life without Boxers, we had a new puppy waiting to be shipped from Crossroad Boxers in California to Minneapolis, Minnesota. We gave this striking 8-month old fawn male the name of Bishop. Little did we realize that he would be the beginning of our own kennel, Bishop's Boxers.

Bishop participated in many dog shows while we had time in graduate school, but then came children and active duty military life. Having the desire to have a puppy from Bishop and the determination to uphold and improve the standard of the boxer breed, we bred Bishop and got our first female, Lady, in February of 2005. Lady produced two wonderful litters of puppies with Telstar's Dixieland Band (Bandit). Telstar Boxers continue to be a large part of our pedigrees. We lost Lady in August 2015 to Cushing's disease. It never gets any easier.

We kept one female puppy from Lady's first litter, Eve. And from one of Eve's litters, we kept Latte, a classic fawn female. We update our blog regularly, so be sure to check back here or on our Facebook page for the most current information.

The puppies are doing great this first week. They are gaining weight quickly (some are really getting chubby!).  By next week, their eyes will be fully open.  Here they are in birth order.  We have received deposits for all fawn and brindle puppies. White and White Check puppies are available to go to loving homes.

Morning Feeding

Moms of newborn pups are ever-watchful and protective of their babies.  They never want to leave, so we have to bring her food and water to her so she can eat and have enough energy to keep up with and nurse the little ones.

Introducing Our New Boxer Puppy Litter

For each litter, our family picks a theme for the puppies' kennel names.  In the past, we have had Bible names, Santa's reindeer (they arrived on December 23), candies, and sodas.  This litter's theme is Hawaii.   In 2000, we began our Navy career at Marine Corps Base Hawaii.  Our oldest two children were born there, so we have many special memories of our years on Oahu.  Nothing beats the fresh pineapple, white sandy beaches, and daily rainbows in the sky. These names remind us of our time there.

Final Puppy Count

Eve did a great job delivering the puppies last night. The final count is 8, with 3 boys, and 5 girls (my eyes must have been fuzzy last night when I initially said 2 boys and 6 girls). They are all doing well.  I'll post individual photos later today (after a nap!).

Puppy Update

It's 4 a.m. and we are up to eight puppies. She's doing a great job!  We'll see if any more might show up.  Count so far: 6 girls, 2 boys! They are beautiful, and a very active bunch already!

Eve Update

Well...we had an x-ray on Saturday, and, unfortunately, have nothing newsworthy to report. They had problems with the x-ray machine, and then determined that the heads were not calcified enough to show up on the film.  We may have another done on Wednesday, but we may just wait and be surprised at whelping time, and just take one after the deliveries to make sure they are all out.  In any case, puppies are coming without a doubt. Eve looks like she swallowed a cantaloupe, but she is doing fine.  Based on her last litter, she will whelp before Saturday--my guess is Thursday.  Check back here for up-to-date information.

Boxer Puppies Coming to South Carolina Next Week!

This is Eve's favorite position these days. As you can see, she's pretty plump! Based on her figure, maybe she'll be having another troop (last year, she had 10!). We'll be getting an x-ray this Saturday so we can know approximately how many to expect next week. We set up the whelping box last weekend so she is free to go in when she feels the need to nest and gets ready to deliver.

Our first boxer Chesty. He wasn't the most beautiful boxer, but certainly well-loved!
